Club History

Hucknall Sports Youth Football Club, originally Riden Sports, was founded in July 1977 by a group of committed individuals including both Derek Day and Bob Wheat who have both remained loyal and committed to the Club over 40 years.
The club started during celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee party on Glendon Drive, Hucknall which included a men's football match that was set up by Derek Day. The parents who took part decided that they needed to find the youngsters of the estate something to do and a meeting was arranged. That first meeting comprised of Derek Day, John Brown, Harold Eastwood and Alan Turner. It was decided to play one team at Under-14s in the Young Elizabethan League and the first home game was played on the Wigwam playing fields in Hucknall, which then became the home of the club for the next 45 years.

Team Colours
The very first kit given to Riden Sports in 1977 was paid for by Richard Harley the owner of Riden Sports Cycle shop on Watnall Road, Hucknall. Richard, together with Derek then selected Red & White stripes shirts, black shorts and red socks which is still Hucknall Sports colours the present day.
Prior to the first match a name had to be chosen and it was decided to ask Richard Harley the owner of Riden Sports to become the President of the team, of which he duly accepted, and the team ran under the name of Riden Sports FC in that first season.

Club Badge
In 1977, the club (originally named Riden Sports) ran a competition for players to create a design and Phil Barnes won it. In 1979, the club changed its name to Hucknall Sports Youth Club and a new logo was inspired by Derek Day commission in the Royal Signals regiment. He decided to use a copy for Hucknall Sports and the logo is referred to as the "Jimmy logo". It was designed for fitment to the shirt by Dennis Jarvis who at the time was working for a company in Hucknall called Certa Cito. The translation from the Latin Certo Cito into English is ‘Swift and Sure’.

A formal committee was set up which comprised of Richard Harley as President, Alan Turner as Chairman, Derek Day as Secretary, Harold Eastwood as Assistant Secretary, John Brown as Treasurer and other committee members were John Duckmanton and Norman Rouse. Gillian Yates later joined the committee to act as fund raiser for the team and organised jumble sales, scrap paper collection, pontoon tickets and sponsored walks to provide funds for the team.
In October 1977, Keith Ince and Bob Wheat were co-opted onto the committee along with Tony Trueman and they formed another team undertaking Friendlies at Under12s level.

1978
Doug Shelton and Tony Trueman were voted onto the committee. The club entered 2 teams into the YEL, one at Under-14s level, which was run by Derek Day and Doug Shelton and the other at Under-12s level which was run by Bob Wheat and Tony Trueman. Due to the resignation of Alan Turner, Ken Ince was voted in as Chairman to take over.
At the end of March 1978 takeover discussions took place in respect of the VAP (Vaughan Association Parents) team joining Hucknall Sports under the management of Ron Berridge. This was agreed upon providing the identity of Riden Sports was maintained, hence the creation of the VAP award at our annual presentation evenings.
The training sessions were held at Titchfield Park, Hucknall and led to more boys joining the club and before long the first championship was won. The club gathered momentum very quickly and went from strength to strength. At its peak 11 football teams were running including a girl’s hockey team, a youth club and a cricket team in the summer.
On 30th June 1978 Bob Wheat was elected Chairman of the club in position he would retain for 25 years.

1979 to 2021
During season 1979/1980, with Hucknall Sports being the only junior soccer club in Hucknall, the numbers grew significantly and the club operated teams in six age groups from Under-11s through to Under-16s.
In May 1979, secretary Derek Day approached Richard Harley about changing the name from Riden Sports to Hucknall Riden Sports for a more local area advocate which was duly agreed upon. On 27th June 1982, the club changed its name yet again to the name we carry today - Hucknall Sports.

2022 to Present
Due to circumstances outside of the clubs control, the club had to look for a new base meaning they would have to move away from Papplewick Green (formerly known as Wigwam). The clubs new base then became The Engine Rooms, Watnall Road, Hucknall (formerly Rolls Royce Leisure). The venue boasts multiple floodlit grass pitches, a 3G training pitch and a club house. Through a lot of hard work and determination, the club were able to play their first game at the venue at the beginning of the 22/23 season. This is a place Hucknall Sports are proud to call their home and a venue the club are continuously aiming to improve as we now have 33 youth football teams.
